Time & Servings
- Preparation Time: 15–20 minutes
- Cooking Time: 4–5 hours on LOW or 2–3 hours on HIGH
- Total Time: About 5 hours
- Servings: 4–6 people
Ingredients
Salisbury Steak Patties
- 1½ pounds (700 g) ground beef (80/20 recommended)
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon paprika
Gravy
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 packet brown gravy mix
- 1 packet onion soup mix
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)
- 1 medium onion, sliced
Optional Thickener
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons cold water
Instructions
1 Make the Patties
In a large mixing bowl, add the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and paprika. Mix gently until just combined. Do not overmix, as this can make the patties tough.
Form the mixture into oval-shaped patties, about 1 inch thick.
2 Brown the Patties (Optional but Recommended)
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a small amount of oil. Brown the patties for 1–2 minutes per side until lightly crusted. This step adds extra flavor but can be skipped if you prefer.
3 Assemble the Slow Cooker
Place the sliced onions and mushrooms in the bottom of the slow cooker. Arrange the patties on top.
In a bowl, whisk together the beef broth, brown gravy mix, onion soup mix, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce. Pour the gravy mixture evenly over the patties.
4 Slow Cook
Cover and cook:
- LOW: 4–5 hours
- HIGH: 2–3 hours
The patties should be fully cooked and very tender, and the gravy should be rich and flavorful.
5 Thicken the Gravy (Optional)
If you prefer thicker gravy, mix the cornstarch with cold water until smooth. Stir it into the slow cooker during the last 20–30 minutes of cooking. Cover and continue cooking until the gravy thickens.
Helpful Tips
- Using ground beef with some fat keeps the patties juicy
- Browning adds flavor but is not required
- Mushrooms add richness but can be omitted
- Avoid lifting the lid too often to maintain cooking temperature
