 Savory Chinese-Style Ground Beef with Tender Cabbage and Garlic-Ginger Sauce

 

This easy yet deeply flavorful Chinese-style ground beef and cabbage stir-fry is packed with savory umami flavor, tender vegetables, and a rich garlic-ginger sauce. It’s perfect for a quick weeknight dinner and pairs beautifully with steamed rice or noodles.

 Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) lean ground beef
  • 4 cups green cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for cooking)
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced (optional but recommended)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated

Garlic-Ginger Sauce

  • ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (or brown sugar)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • ¼ cup water or beef broth

Cornstarch Slurry (for thickening)

  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons cold water

For Garnish (Optional)

  • Sliced green onions
  • Toasted sesame seeds

 Instructions

1 Prepare the Sauce

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and water.
  2. In a separate small bowl, mix cornstarch with cold water until smooth.
  3. Set both aside.

2 Cook the Ground Beef

  1. Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  2. Add vegetable oil, then add ground beef.
  3. Cook for 5–7 minutes, breaking it apart, until fully browned.
  4. Drain excess fat if needed.

3 Add Aromatics

  1. Push the beef to one side of the pan.
  2. Add sesame oil to the empty side.
  3. Add onion, garlic, and ginger.
  4. Stir-fry for 30–60 seconds until fragrant (do not burn).

4 Add the Cabbage

  1. Add the sliced cabbage to the pan.
  2. Toss everything together and cook for 3–5 minutes, until the cabbage softens but still has a slight crunch.

5 Add Sauce & Thicken

  1. Pour the prepared garlic-ginger sauce over the beef and cabbage.
  2. Stir well and let simmer for 2 minutes.
  3. Add the cornstarch slurry and stir constantly.
  4. Cook another 1–2 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats everything beautifully.

6 Final Touch

  • Taste and adjust seasoning (more soy sauce or pepper if needed).
  • Remove from heat.

  • Pair with fried rice or lo mein noodles
  • Serve low-carb over cauliflower rice
