Ingredients

For the Cabbage Rolls

  • 1 large head green cabbage
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (or half beef, half pork for extra flavor)
  • 1 cup cooked white rice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp dried thyme (optional)
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

For the Tomato Sauce

  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14 oz / 400 g) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp sugar (balances the acidity)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 cup water or beef broth

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Cabbage

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  2. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage.
  3. Place the whole cabbage into the boiling water.
  4. As the outer leaves soften, gently peel them off and set aside.
  5. Continue until you have about 12–15 large leaves.
  6. Let the leaves cool, then trim the thick vein at the base to make rolling easier.

Step 2: Make the Filling

  1. In a large bowl, combine:
    • Ground meat
    • Cooked rice
    • Chopped onion
    • Garlic
    • Egg
    • Salt, pepper, paprika, thyme, and parsley
  2. Mix gently until everything is well combined (don’t overmix).

Step 3: Assemble the Cabbage Rolls

  1. Lay a cabbage leaf flat on a clean surface.
  2. Place about 2–3 tablespoons of filling near the base.
  3. Fold in the sides, then roll tightly from bottom to top.
  4. Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.

Step 4: Prepare the Sauce

  1. In a bowl, mix tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, salt, pepper, paprika, and water or broth.
  2. Stir well until smooth.

Step 5: Cook the Cabbage Rolls

  1. Spread a thin layer of sauce on the bottom of a large pot or baking dish.
  2. Arrange cabbage rolls seam-side down.
  3. Pour remaining sauce over the rolls.
  4. Cover tightly.

Stovetop Method:
