This is a traditional, no-fuss recipe passed down through generations — easy to make, incredibly flavorful, and always a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

For the Apple Layer

  • 4 large apples (Granny Smith or Golden Delicious work best)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

For the Cake Batter

  • 3 large eggs (room temperature)
  • ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (120 ml) vegetable oil or melted butter
  • ½ cup (120 ml) milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1¾ cups (200 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • A pinch of salt

For the Crumble Topping

  • ⅔ cup (80 g) cold butter, cubed
  • ¾ cup (100 g) all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup (80 g) brown sugar (or white sugar)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Apples

  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin slices.
  2. Place them in a bowl and mix with sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and lemon juice.
  3. Set aside to allow the apples to release their natural juices and absorb the flavors.

Step 2: Make the Cake Batter

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Grease and lightly flour a round or square cake pan.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar together until pale and slightly fluffy.
  4. Add the oil (or melted butter) and vanilla extract, then mix well.
  5. Pour in the milk and stir until fully combined.
  6. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  7. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring gently until smooth and lump-free.

Step 3: Prepare the Crumble Topping

  1. In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, and cinnamon.
  2. Add the cold butter cubes.
  3. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Do not overmix — the crumble should stay crumbly.

Assembling the Cake

  1. Pour the cake batter evenly into the prepared pan.
  2. Arrange the apple slices evenly over the batter.
  3. Sprinkle the crumble topping generously over the apples, covering the surface completely.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45–50 minutes.
  • The cake is done when the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • If the crumble browns too quickly, loosely cover the cake with foil during the last 10 minutes.

Serving Suggestions

  • Let the cake cool slightly before slicing.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature.
  • Delicious on its own or paired with:
    • Vanilla ice cream
    • Whipped cream
    • A dusting of powdered sugar

Storage

  • Store the cake covered at room temperature for up to 2 days.
  • Refrigerate for up to 5 days.
  • Can be reheated slightly before serving for a fresh-baked taste.

Nana’s Tips

  • Slightly tart apples balance the sweetness perfectly.
  • Cold butter is essential for a crunchy crumble topping.
  • This cake tastes even better the next day as the flavors settle.
