Southern Sweet Potato Casserole
Southern Sweet Potato Casserole is a classic comfort-food side dish that is especially popular during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and family gatherings throughout the American South. It combines creamy, sweet mashed sweet potatoes with a rich, buttery pecan topping that becomes crisp and golden as it bakes. The contrast between the smooth filling and the crunchy topping makes this dish a favorite at holiday tables.
Ingredients
For the Sweet Potato Filling
- 4 large sweet potatoes (about 4 cups mashed)
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
- ½ cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
For the Pecan Streusel Topping
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
- ⅓ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Sweet Potatoes
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Wash, peel, and cut the sweet potatoes into large chunks. Place them in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook for about 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender. Drain well and allow them to cool slightly.
Step 2: Make the Filling
Transfer the cooked sweet potatoes to a large mixing bowl. Mash until smooth. Add the melted butter, sugar, eggs, milk, vanilla extract, salt, and cinnamon if using. Mix thoroughly until the filling is creamy and well combined with no large lumps remaining.
Step 3: Assemble the Casserole
Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or a 2-quart casserole dish. Spread the sweet potato mixture evenly into the prepared dish, smoothing the top with a spatula.
Step 4: Prepare the Topping
In a medium bowl, combine the brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Add the softened butter and mix with a fork or pastry cutter until the mixture becomes crumbly. Stir in the chopped pecans until evenly distributed.
Step 5: Add the Topping
Sprinkle the pecan mixture evenly over the sweet potato filling, making sure the entire surface is covered. This topping will become deliciously crisp and caramelized during baking.
Step 6: Bake
Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is hot throughout. If the topping begins to brown too quickly, loosely cover the dish with aluminum foil.
Step 7: Serve
Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for about 10 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set slightly and makes serving easier.
Chef’s Notes
- For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg to the filling.
- If you prefer a traditional holiday-style casserole, scatter mini marshmallows over the top during the last 10 minutes of baking.
- Roasting the sweet potatoes instead of boiling them will produce a richer, sweeter flavor.
- The casserole can be prepared up to 24 hours in advance and stored in the refrigerator before baking.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 4 days and reheated in the oven.
