No-Oven Stovetop Bread (Soft & Easy Skillet Bread)
If you don’t have an oven or just want a quick homemade bread, this stovetop bread is perfect. It’s soft on the inside, slightly crispy on the outside, and made with simple ingredients you probably already have at home.
Ingredients:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1¼ cups warm water (not hot, about 40°C / 105°F)
Instructions:
1. Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl:
- Combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast
- Stir gently and let it sit for 5–10 minutes
You should see bubbles or foam forming on top.
This means the yeast is active and ready to use. If nothing happens, your yeast may be expired.
2. Make the Dough
In a large mixing bowl:
- Add the flour and salt
- Pour in the yeast mixture and oil
Mix everything together until it forms a soft dough.
If the dough feels too dry, add a little more water (1 tablespoon at a time).
If it’s too sticky, sprinkle in a little flour.
3. Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough onto a clean surface and knead it for about 8–10 minutes.
Proper kneading is important:
- The dough should become smooth and elastic
- When you press it, it should bounce back slightly
4. First Rise (Proofing)
- Lightly oil a bowl and place the dough inside
- Cover it with a towel or plastic wrap
- Let it rest in a warm place for about 1 hour
The dough should double in size.
5. Shape the Bread
- Punch down the dough to release air
- Divide it into equal portions (or keep it whole)
- Shape into flat rounds (like small discs)
6. Cook on the Stovetop
- Heat a heavy pan (non-stick or cast iron) over low to medium heat
- Place the dough in the pan
Cook:
- 5–7 minutes on the first side
- Flip and cook another 5–7 minutes
Cover the pan with a lid to help the inside cook evenly.
Tips for Best Results:
- Always cook on low heat to avoid burning the outside while the inside stays raw
- Use a lid to trap heat like a mini oven
- Don’t make the bread too thick, or it won’t cook through
- Brush with butter after cooking for extra softness and flavor
Optional Add-ins:
You can customize your bread by adding:
- Garlic powder or fresh minced garlic
- Dried herbs (oregano, thyme)
- Black seeds (nigella) or sesame seeds
- Cheese inside for a stuffed version
Final Result:
You’ll get bread that is:
- Soft and fluffy inside
- Lightly crispy outside
- Perfect for sandwiches, dipping, or eating warm with butter
