Salisbury Steak with Mashed Potatoes & Green Beans
A classic American comfort food dish with juicy beef patties, rich mushroom gravy, creamy mashed potatoes, and tender green beans.
Salisbury Steak
Ingredients:
- 1 lb (500g) ground beef
- 1/2 small onion, finely grated
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional)
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, grated onion, breadcrumbs, egg, mustard, garlic, soy sauce, salt, pepper, and paprika.
- Mix gently until just combined. Do not overmix, or the steaks will be tough.
- Divide mixture and shape into 3–4 oval patties (longer than hamburger patties).
- Heat 1–2 tablespoons oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Cook patties for about 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned.
- Remove from skillet and set aside (they will finish cooking in the gravy).
Mushroom Gravy
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 8 oz (200g) mushrooms, sliced
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Salt to taste
Instructions:
- In the same skillet, melt butter.
- Add onions and cook until soft.
- Add mushrooms and cook until they release moisture and begin to brown.
- Sprinkle flour over mushrooms and stir for 1 minute.
- Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps.
- Add soy sauce and pepper.
- Let simmer until thickened (about 5–7 minutes).
- Return patties to skillet, spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer for 10–15 minutes until fully cooked.
Creamy Mashed Potatoes
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs (1 kg) potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/2–3/4 cup warm milk
- Salt to taste
- Optional: 2 tablespoons heavy cream
Instructions:
- Boil potatoes in salted water for 18–20 minutes until fork-tender.
- Drain well.
- Mash potatoes while hot.
- Add butter and mix until melted.
- Slowly add warm milk until smooth and creamy.
- Season with salt (and cream if using).
Simple Green Beans
Ingredients:
- 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed
- 1 tablespoon butter or olive oil
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Boil green beans in salted water for 5–7 minutes until tender-crisp.
- Drain.
- In a pan, heat butter or oil.
- Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
- Toss in green beans and season with salt and pepper.
To Serve:
- Spoon mashed potatoes onto the plate.
- Place Salisbury steak on top or beside.
- Generously pour mushroom gravy over the steak.
- Add green beans on the side.
