How to Make Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast
Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast is a classic American comfort food, sometimes called “SOS.” It’s creamy, savory, and easy to make with simple ingredients. This dish is commonly served for breakfast or brunch, but it also works well as a quick lunch or dinner.
Ingredients (Serves 2–4)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1½–2 cups milk (whole milk preferred)
- 1 jar or package chipped beef (dried beef)
- Black pepper, to taste
- Optional: garlic powder or onion powder
- Sliced bread, toasted
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Chipped Beef
Chipped beef is very salty, so it’s best to reduce the saltiness first.
- Separate the beef slices.
- Rinse briefly under cold water or soak in warm water for 5–10 minutes.
- Drain well and chop into small pieces.
Step 2: Make the Roux
- In a skillet or saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the flour and stir constantly.
- Cook for 1–2 minutes until smooth and lightly golden.
Step 3: Add the Milk
- Slowly pour in the milk while whisking.
- Continue stirring to prevent lumps.
- Cook for 3–5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
If the sauce is too thick, add more milk. If it’s too thin, let it simmer longer.
Step 4: Add the Beef and Seasoning
- Stir in the chopped chipped beef.
- Let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
- Season with black pepper to taste.
- Add garlic or onion powder if desired.
Do not add salt—the beef is already salty.
Step 5: Toast and Serve
- Toast the bread until golden.
- Place the toast on a plate.
- Spoon the creamed beef over the toast.
- Serve hot.
Serving Ideas
- Add a fried egg on top
