This recipe combines everything you love about tacos—savory meat, bold spices, and gooey cheese—into an easy baked meal that’s both kid-friendly and crowd-pleasing. Best of all, it’s simple to customize with your favorite taco toppings and fillings.

Ingredients

Taco Filling

  • 1 pound (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 packet taco seasoning (or 2 tablespoons homemade taco seasoning)
  • ½ cup water
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Dough & Cheese

  • 1 package refrigerated pizza dough or crescent roll dough
  • 1½–2 cups shredded cheddar cheese or Mexican cheese blend
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella (optional, for extra melt)

Optional Toppings & Add-Ins

  • Diced tomatoes
  • Sliced black olives
  • Jalapeños
  • Cooked corn
  • Green onions

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Taco Meat

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Heat a skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.
  4. Add chopped onion and garlic; cook for 2–3 minutes until softened.
  5. Stir in taco seasoning and water.
  6. Simmer for 5 minutes, then remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Step 2: Prepare the Dough

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the pizza or crescent dough into a large rectangle.
  3. Using a knife or pizza cutter, make diagonal cuts (about 1 inch wide) down both long sides of the dough, leaving the center uncut.

Step 3: Assemble the Taco Braid

  1. Spoon the taco meat evenly down the center of the dough.
  2. Sprinkle cheese generously over the meat.
  3. Add any optional toppings you like.
  4. Fold the dough strips alternately over the filling, crossing them to create a braided pattern.

Step 4: Bake

  1. Place the taco braid in the oven and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and fully cooked.
  2. Remove from the oven and allow it to rest for 5 minutes before slicing.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the Taco Braid with:

  • Sour cream
  • Salsa or pico de gallo
  • Guacamole
  • Shredded lettuce

Slice and serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

Tips for the Best Taco Braid

  • Let the meat cool slightly to prevent soggy dough.
  • Use parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  • Swap ground beef for ground chicken or turkey.
  • Add cream cheese or refried beans for extra creaminess.

Why This Recipe Works

The Taco Braid delivers bold taco flavors in a fun, shareable form. The crispy baked dough contrasts perfectly with the savory filling, while melted cheese brings everything together into a satisfying, comforting meal.
