Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes
- Peel the potatoes and slice them very thin (about ⅛ inch).
- Put them in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning.
- Drain and pat dry before using.
Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef
- Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until soft.
- Add garlic (if using) and cook 30 seconds.
- Add ground beef, break it apart, and cook until browned.
- Season with salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Drain excess grease and set aside.
Step 3: Make the Creamy Sauce
- In a medium bowl, mix:
- Cream of mushroom soup
- Milk
- Heavy cream or sour cream (if using)
- Stir until smooth and well combined.
Step 4: Assemble the Casserole
- Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
- Grease a 9×13 inch (or similar) baking dish.
Layering (very important):
- First layer: sliced potatoes
- Second layer: ground beef
- Third layer: pour some cream sauce
- Fourth layer: sprinkle shredded cheese
Repeat layers until everything is used, ending with cheese on top.
Step 5: Bake
- Cover tightly with aluminum foil.
- Bake for 45–50 minutes until potatoes are tender.
- Remove foil and bake uncovered for 10–15 minutes until cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden.
Step 6: Rest & Serve
- Let the casserole rest 10 minutes before serving.
- This helps it set and makes cutting easier.
Tips & Variations
- Extra cheesy: Add cheese between every layer
- More flavor: Add cooked mushrooms or bell peppers
- Spicy version: Add chili flakes or jalapeños
- Healthier option: Use ground turkey and low-fat cheese
- No canned soup: Make your own white sauce with butter, flour, and milk
